La teoria dei prototipi, che riscontra ormai una crescente attenzione anche in àmbito filosofico, è analizzata da Taylor, con lucidità e chiarezza, a partire dai primi studi di Eleanor Rosch sulla categorizzazione dei colori. Attraverso la psicolinguistica e la linguistica antropologica, il volume prende in esame non solo gli sviluppi teorici più rilevanti, legati all’àmbito privilegiato della semantica lessicale, ma anche le sue recenti applicazioni alla fonologia, alla morfologia e alla sintassi.
In questa seconda edizione, il volume è ampliato con un capitolo di aggiornamento, che prende in considerazione la letteratura più recente, in particolare per quanto riguarda i temi della polisemia e del livello base della categorizzazione.

Prototype theory is being payed an increasing attention in philosophical research on meaning and conceptualization.
This book gives an account of its development starting from early Eleanor Rosch's studies on colour categorization. Passing through psycho-linguistics and anthropological linguistics, Taylor, on one side, focuses his attention on the most relevant theoric implications of the theory, that is the development of prototype semantics; on the other side, he takes in the foreground the recent applications of prototype theory to phonology, morphology, and syntax.
For the second edition, Taylor has added a further chapter which updates the book, particularly in its treatment of polysemy and basic level categorization.
